Question:
1. Theoretically, gene therapies could be used to prevent a child from acquiring a terrible disease, to make her better looking, or to change her personality. Which of these would you be willing to change? Under any circumstances would you be willing to change your child’s personality? What if she were genetically predestined to be extremely aggressive, or just a really mean person?
IMPORTANT: For whatever position you take, explain why you feel that way. For example, don’t write that something feels like “playing god” unless you also explain what you mean by “playing god” and why it’s bad to do so.
IMPORTANT: Be sure you have your facts right. For example, many people feel that personality is largely determined by a person’s environment. This does not appear to be the case, though. Genetic and environmental factors are likely to both be important in determining personality.
