Case Studies

Case 1: Allprovince Insurance

Allprovince is an insurance company which provides a variety of products, including life insurance and automotive insurance. To help determine the rates which customers will pay, Allprovince purchases data from several third party companies. One third party company sells customer-specific search-engine browser history to Allprovince. Allprovince mines this data for health-related key words, doctor/hospital visits, and other medically-related information. Allprovince then charges customers with increased likelihood of health issues a higher rate for life insurance. They do this to compensate for the increased likelihood of mortality so that the insurance company can stay in business. Another third party sells customer-specific vehicle location and speed information recorded from the on-board GPS system of their vehicle. Allprovince gives higher rates to customers that drive at higher speeds, accelerate more quickly, and drive in areas with a higher known rate of accidents.

Case 2: GenTech Inc.

In the relatively near future, it may be possible to have your entire genome sequenced and profiled for a very low cost. Suppose this becomes possible. GenTech Inc. requires that all job applicants must provide their complete genome sequence. GenTech Inc. has several positions which require the worker to interact with vulnerable persons. For these positions, GenTech Inc. screens out applicants whose genomes indicate a disease or trait associated with antisocial/violent behavior. GenTech Inc. has several upper management positions. For these positions, GenTech Inc. shows a preference for candidates whose genomes suggest a predisposition for leadership and the ability to take charge. GenTech Inc. also has several consulting positions in which employees must interact with clients and try to convince them to purchase GenTech Inc.'s products. For these positions, GenTech Inc. hires candidates who's genetic profile suggests they are an extravert and are more physically attractive.
