1.In Chapter 10's Preview section, the authors presented a study showing that handling money reduces the perception of pain (Zhou, Vohs, & Baumeister, 2009). In the experiment, a group of college students was told that they were participating in a manual dexterity study. Half of the students were given a stack of money to count and the other half got a stack of blank pieces of paper. After the counting task, the participants were asked to dip their hands into bowls of very hot water and rate how uncomfortable it was on a scale of 1 (extremely comfortable) to 9 (extremely uncomfortable). You attempt to replicate the study and find the following data (see ancillary data files). You test the hypothesis that handling money will in fact lower perceived pain compared to those not handling money. Based on your analysis of the data, did the group handling money report lower levels of perceived pain compared to the other group? In other words, was there a significant difference in reported pain between the two conditions in the direction hypothesized? Use a one-tailed, t-test with alpha set to .01 to test your hypothesis.
