2024 Integrated Project: Design, Make, and Test
Project Overview
Your project involves designing a solution to a problem, constructing the solution, and then testing it.
Project Description
Your objective is to create a mechanism that makes an empty coke can roll as far as possible across the
floor. The drive mechanism must be housed entirely inside the can. You will need to remove one end of the
can to insert your mechanism, ensuring the can retains its cylindrical shape. You may use any size can.
You can use any type of drive mechanism or energy source, provided it fits completely inside the can. No
parts may protrude from the can, and no external attachments are allowed to drive it. Explosive or
flammable materials, as well as dry cell or storage batteries, are prohibited.
The roll distance will be measured in a straight line. It is crucial that your can rolls straight; otherwise, you
will lose marks. If your can does not roll at all, you will receive zero marks.
Note: Failure to adhere to project specifications and constraints, missing deadlines, or being unprepared on
demonstration day will result in a score of zero.

Project Title
Student Names
Course Name/s and Code/s
Instructor's Name/s
Date of Submission
Concept Design (5 Marks)
Present your ideas to solve the problem, including sketches and brief notes. Your ideas
should be based on engineering and related principles.
Working Drawing (5 Marks)
Provide a detailed drawing that you will use to build your mechanism after finalising your
concept.
Performance Analysis Report (P.A.R)(10 Marks)
Submit a report evaluating the performance of your mechanism after testing it yourself.
Include suggestions for improvement and possibly additional sketches.
Calculations (10 Marks)
Provide detailed calculations as well as the rationale for the calculations.
Use tables, graphs, and charts to illustrate findings.
Compare your calculations with theoretical predictions/findings.
Demonstration Day (30 Marks)
The date will be decided in consultation. The assessment will compare your can's roll
distance to those of your classmates. The team with the furthest roll will receive full marks
(100%). Other teams will be graded based on their distances relative to the furthest roll. For
example, if team 1's distance is 8 m , they get 100%. If team 2's distance is 4 m , they get 50%
(10048), and if team 3's distance is 2 m , they get 25%(10028).
Roll distances will be measured in a straight line on the floor of the workshop passage, so ensure your can
rolls straight for maximum marks.
