2 Parts Environmental Ethics Final Assignment 1) Minimum 5 to 7-page paper (15% of grade) This paper explains which environmental charity you think I ought to give money to. This paper will explain the charity and make a moral argument about why this charity is worth my money. To do that, you will need to 1) explain the charity 2) explain why this charity is better than at least two other charities that deal with the same issue, and 3) make a case for why this charity addresses an important moral issue. Regarding 1 and 2. Some of these elements could be addressed in either 1 or 2 so I'm discussing them together. What is the primary focus of this charity? What is it about this charity that gives you confidence that they will achieve the aims that they set out to achieve? Several websites track charities and report on how well they steward the money given to them (e.g., some charities spend a surprisingly large amount of money on overhead, staff salaries, and advertising while spending very little on direct contribution to the beneficiary of the charity (this could be a decent first place to look)). As much as possible, give specific evidence about the goods that the charity has achieved. Vague platitudes like "raise awareness" don't say much. As a side note, it doesn't have to be the case that the charities you compare it to deal with exactly the same issue/species. It can be broadly conceived. Perhaps the charity that you give money to helps a particular species of turtle. You don't need to find two other charities that help that specific species. It would be enough to consider charities that help wetlands in which that species lives or that helps turtles generally (which would include that species). The more similar the charities the easier it will be to make the comparison, but I don't want you to feel as though you can't benefit charity X just because there aren't two other charities that specifically help X. Regarding 3. This will entail discussion of both moral theory and standing. On what basis can you say that it would be good to give money to that. This will require some discussion of what you mean by good (theory) and why it would be good to give it to that (standing). So you will need a paragraph explaining the moral theory and then another paragraph applying the moral theory to that charity. You will need a different paragraph presenting a position on moral standing and then yet another applying that theory of moral standing to this charity. To do this section well, you will need more than a page to discuss the ethical issues of your charity. To be clear: you are saying which theory YOU are relying on and not which theory the charity is motivated by. You will claim a partisan affiliation to an ethical theory and why that theory motivates you to pick charity X. If you're doing utilitarianism there ought to be at least an implicit CBA, if deontology a discussion of particular rights/duties, and if virtue ethics, identify a particular virtue and discuss how it applies to this charity. The paper will be a minimum of 5-7 pages (not including the works cited page), but it can be longer. It must: Include a link to the charity in question as well as the comparative charities that you reject. Be no more than double-spaced. Use a standard font (for ex. Calibri 11 pt., Times New Roman 12 pt., etc.) Have proper citations using whichever method you would like. If you're an English major and want to use MLA, go for it. If you'd prefer to use APA or Chicago, that's also fine. While Chicago is the standard for academic philosophy journals (or a proprietary method for that journal), philosophy classes generally leave it up to you. All instances of plagiarism will be reported to the office of student conduct, and you will receive a 0 for the entire final assignment grade (which is 25% of your grade). Due Date: Your paper is due the day of the presentation. If your paper is late, you will lose a a full letter grade per day that it is late (incl. weekends). It will not be accepted after two days of being late. HE+ Component: The primary difference between the regular and HE+ sections of the class is that HE+ students will be required to select a local charity (either local as in Lubbock or local to your hometown). Before the final project is due, you would need to go to that charity and either volunteer for a few hours or interview the staff about their charity to make your charity selection/presentation more robust. Because you have this additional step as part of your assignment, I will be reaching out periodically throughout the semester to make sure that you've got your selection and answer any questions you might have about the final project so that you can more effectively accomplish setting up the charity visit around your schedule. Because I do not know how many local environmental charities there are, I will not be requiring that every person select a different charity. If you want, you can even visit/volunteer at the charity with a friend.
