A company has to plan the use of its vehicles to deliver its product to a number of customers. Each vehicle can carry (at most) 20 tonnes of the product the company produces each time it makes a delivery trip. The company has six customers who require delivery in the next week and their demands for this product are as shown below: Demand (tonnes) 100 55 Customer 1 2 3 4 5 6 75 35 40 90 I So customer 4, for example, requires 35 tonnes of the product in the next week. Vehicles can visit either one customer on a delivery trip, or two customers, but no more. A delivery trip just visiting a single customer costs the company 1000. A delivery trip visiting two different customers costs 1750. If a vehicle makes a delivery trip to two different customers then the product carried is split equally between these two customers. Customers are happy to accept more product than they have demanded if it fits with the company's delivery operation One constraint upon the delivery operation is that the number of single customer deliveries cannot be more than 50% of the total number of vehicle deliveries. A further constraint is that if one or more single customer delivery trips are made to customer 3 an additional fixed cost of 2500 is incurred. Formulate the problem of deciding the delivery trips the company should make so as to supply all of the customers and minimise total cost as an integer linear program (25 marks) D Focus
