(4) The Case of the Proud Grandfather. A baby boy was born to Mr. and Mrs. Lanfier on December 17. Two days later, they named the boy "August Dwayne." He was named "August" after his maternal grandfather, August Schultz. A week later, the grandfather promised the parents that if they named the baby "August," he would give them a certain painting, valued at $5,000. They agreed. Was there a binding contract? Cf. Lanfier v. Lanfier, 227 Iowa 258 (1939). Would all doubt concerning enforceability have been removed if, in addition, Schultz had prescribed and received a $1 payment from the Lanfiers?
