Paul Farr Case Study of Best Practice in Deliver: DHL General Manager European Control Tower, DHL Supply Chain, Bonn, Germany An Integrated Planning Solution for Temperature-Controlled Road Transport This case study considers an integrated planning solution for DHL customers DHL Supply Chain (DHL) provides solutions to customers around the globe. that produce chilled and frozen food and need it transported to their customers by road transport. What was the situation before? DHL was operating six site operations for customers who supply and the food service industry. As part of the ongoing relationship with DHL, temperature-controlled goods to large supermarket chains, smaller retailers the team in this case identified that the customers had similar products going to similar destinations using the same mode of transport. As each of the six sites operated independently it was clear that there could be an opportunity to achieve benefits if these six operations were planned as one, and integrated together under one roof. For example if there were two transport planners in each site that would mean 12 planners were being used in total. If an integrated solution was implemented where the planning was managed in one location, this number could be reduced and benefits could be obtained. However, an obstacle to streamline the operations was poor visibility of the overall road transport network operations as they all ran independently. Also, due to sickness leave cases and absenteeism, there was a risk of skill and manpower shortage in transport planning. What changes took place? DHL set up a new single control tower for the planning of their emperature-controlled business. The control tower manages all the planning, ompliance with road transport legislation, customer service and administra- on. The control tower was not just desks with PC's on top. A state of the art space was created with plasma screens, video walls and the latest systems to create an excellent working environment as well as having the ability to track vehicles and produce live up to date KPI information. What were the challenges? Finding the right space was a challenge. It was key not to have "just another office". It was difficult to get people to relocate and also to recruit people with the right skills all in the one location. As a result there was a learning curve experienced during the launch phase of the control tower. The systems were the same but had to be used differently. This linked to the processes that needed to be adjusted to fit the integrated as oppose to a fragmented planning model. The team used the DHL DEPICT Project Management methodology to reengineer the processes now used in the control tower today. What are the positive results? There is now an integrated planning solution in place that has improved customer service, costs and visibility as well as carbon reduction. In terms of customer service, there is a dedicated team with allocated roles to support the customer. There is greater visibility of the whole operation to allow clear information flow to improve service. Costs are improved as the integrated solution reduces empty miles, also helping with the green logistics agenda. Also there is better sub-contractor procurement and management due to the economies of scale. By ensuring a core number of staff present in the control tower at all times, overall management is facilitated and holiday or absence gives less risk exposure. There are new opportunities as a result; for example integrating the retail outbound (supermarket) deliveries with the DHL inbound deliveries. As the control tower has excellent road transport visibility it can now identify retail delivery vehicles from other DHL contracts and reroute them to collect from its own six operations.
