To determine column diameter:
(a) Gather fluid property data for streams V,L,V,&L?.
(b) Determine fluid properties at location where flooding velocity will be calculated (bottom plate is recommended). Use the Txy diagram to get temperature data for a plate of interest, recognizing that at each plate (state) in the McCabe-Thiele plot, there is an x,y coordinate corresponding to an x-y tieline on the Txy diagram. That tie line lies also on the temperature for that plate.
(c) Determine L and V from the McCabe-Thiele diagram by doing a material balance around top or bottom (bottom is recommended) section of column.
(d) Determine FLV for use in Fig. 6.23.
(e) Use Fig. 6.23 assuming a tray spacing (24" is recommended) to determine the value of CF.
(f) Use Eqn. 6.42 to determine C. You will need to determin values of the factors in this equation to use along with CF.
(g) Use Eqn. 6.40 to determine Uf
(h) Use Eqn. 6.44 assuming a fraction of flooding (0.8 is recommended) to determine DT. You will need to determin the value of AdA.
