9 . Writing a Good Thesis Statement A good thesis statement has certain characteristics. In a good thesis statement, the writer clearly defines an opinion on a subject, asserts one main idea, has something worthwhile to say, limits the subject and main idea to fit the assignment, and uses specific language. Many of your college essays will require a good thesis statement. Here is a writing assignment for a composition class that requires a thesis statement: Writing Prompt Prepare to write an essay about a controversial issue. First, decide on a specific controversial issue. After you have investigated the topic, decide your own position. Write a thesis statement that expresses your position on your chosen issue; support your position in a 3 to 5 page essay.
