A 500 MW (net power) coal-fired steam power plant operates on a regenerative reheat Rankine cycle
using an open feedwater heater. The condenser operates at 6 kPa and the OFWH operates at 1.5 MPa .
The boiler delivers steam at 10.0 MPa and 700C and the reheater delivers steam at 1.5 MPa and 600C.
Both turbines have an isentropic efficiency of 0.95. The pumps can be considered ideal.
a) Referring to the diagram below, draw and label the cycle and states on a T-s diagram.
b) Calculate the thermal efficiency of the cycle.
c) Calculate the thermal efficiency of a simple Rankine cycle operating between the same boiler
pressure and temperature and condenser pressure as the regenerative reheat Rankine cycle. Assume
a single turbine with an isentropic efficiency of 0.95.
d) Determine the input power required for each pump of the regenerative reheat steam plant.
e) If the heating value of coal is 25,000kJkg and the boiler efficiency is 0.90, determine the weight of
coal consumed in one year by the regenerative reheat steam plant.
f) If 2.4 kg of CO2 is produced per kg of coal combusted, how many cubic meters of CO2(at STP) will
be released into the environment per year?
