A company with 1000 employees (each with a desktop PC and a laptop) is located in a single office building with 1 Gbps Ethernet wiring to each desktop. The company also has a rack of 20 high-end servers each connected via 10 Gbps high-speed Ethernet. Laptops connect wirelessly to 802.11/WiFi with 40 access points (APs), each serving up to 25 employees. The network also has a single router which serves as the external gateway to the Internet. Applications running on the PCs and laptops use standard HTTP/TCP/IP stacks. (a) Draw a neat network diagram of the enterprise network outlined above. Your answer should include a high-level drawing of the whole network, identifying each major component including Ethernet or WLAN, ARP, routers/ switches, gateway IP routers, DHCP servers, etc. Show applicable protocol stacks next to each network element type in your network diagram. [10 pts) (b) How many Ethernet ports are required to support the specified number of PC's, laptops and servers? Explain your answer [Hint: remember to include ports for servers, switch-to-switch links, WiFi APs)] [5 pts] (c) Consider a packet generated by a wireless laptop as it enters a WiFi access point which acts a bridge between 802.11 and Ethernet link layers. Draw the header fields of a TCP/IP packet: (i) as it enters the AP over WiFi, being sure to include all the encapsulated layers in addition to the link layer; and (ii) as it leaves the AP and enters the wired Ethernet network. [5 pts] (d) [extra credit] Suppose that each (wired) PC in the network is used for an internal company database application running on internal company servers as well as external web access. Assume that there are 20 DB application queries per hour from each PC, and that each is a 100 byte query which results in a response data of length 2000 bytes. Also, assume that there are 10 web accesses per hour from each PC, each with a 200 byte query to an external web server and a reply of 1000 bytes. Estimate the total inbound and outbound traffic to/from: (i) the internal company servers, and (ii) to the external Internet. Explain your calculations.
