A computer programmer who was on the MIT campus used the MIT network to download approximately 4.8 million articles from JSTOR, which is a not-for-profit digital library. Anyone on the MIT campus could access MIT's computer network and, as a result, JSTOR, but JSTOR's terms of service limited the number of articles that could be downloaded at a time. In order to download the large number of articles, the programmer wrote a script that instructed his computer to download JSTOR articles continuously. When this violation was detected and requests from his computer were denied, he spoofed his computer's address to trick JSTOR servers.
