A key concept in Human Services and case management is the client's right to self-determination. Self-determination refers to the right of a client to make their own decisions and choices. In the end it isn't our responsibility as a case manager, or ethical really, to put our own opinion on a client. It is our responsibility, however, to help a client make an informed decision regarding their own life and to help them understand the impact of that decision. We want to always ensure we are empowering client's to make decisions based on what is best for them. Discuss your understanding/opinion of self-determination in a few brief sentences. Give an example of when it might be difficult to honor the right of self-determination. How do you balance self-determination with helping the client? When (if ever) do you think it is acceptable to disregard self-determination?
