Question: A pin - jointed truss structure is pinned at support A and rests on a roller at support C as indicated in Figure Q .

A pin-jointed truss structure is pinned at support A and rests on a roller at support C as
indicated in Figure Q.1. The truss carries a concentrated characteristic load on its top chord as
shown. Assume all connections are welded and lateral bracing is present at A, B and C.
Using the design data given: Gk=30 kN and Qk=250 kN
(i) for Equation 6.10(a) and Equation 6.10(b) of EN1990:2002,determine the design load
applied to the top chord and the value of the girder support reactions,
(ii) check the suitability of the section indicated for the diagonal compression members of
the girder and
(iii) check the suitability of the section indicated for the top chord of the girder.

(iv) Check the suitability of the proposed section for tension members using the design rules given in
Eurocode 3.
(v) If the selected cross sections above is not safe then propose a new section and repeat all the calculations
for the new section to show that it is safe.
