A recommendation I would suggest for improving services provided by my practicum organization is providing the staff with a better system when entering positive COVID and Flu test results. The staff has been overwhelmed with the number of positive tests they have received for both reporting conditions that they are currently behind when entering them. The system they now have to use when entering the results is having to print all positive results from the fax machine, organizing each section from reporting condition, and jurisdiction. Then they can start by manually entering each result's information such as patients' information and which lab is reporting. A suggestion they can do is to hire someone to solely to the printing and organization process as well as hire multiple people to just enter the results. Each epidemiologist currently has its reporting disease to track on top of assisting with entering Flu and COVID cases. Hiring more staff will allow the reporting cases to be up to date weekly rather than being behind which can provide the city with an accurate number of infected Flu and COVID cases. Part 2: One objective of how I plan to integrate the competency of critical thinking into my practicum experience is by using the information I have learned from my preceptor regarding the use of Excel and how to create formulas to help develop my data surveillance on COVID and Flu. I don't have much experience when using Excel and at my practicum location, this is their primary way of data reporting. I have been working on my practicum assignment during my office hours and my preceptor allows me to try to find or create what I need and if I need help, he assists me. I have been able to create certain functions on Excel for my data surveillance tool alone when we both were stuck on how to figure out the process. A crucial part of critical thinking is developing intellectual humility—in other words, being open-minded while seeking to learn more (Brown,2021). Excel does use a lot of critical thinking since there are endless amounts of formulas and tools that one can use when using this software.
