Question: A single C 2 5 0 3 7 tension member made of 3 5 0 W steel is bolted to a gusset plate, as shown

A single C25037 tension member made of 350W steel is bolted to a gusset plate, as shown
in the figure below. The bolts are installed in pairs at a longitudinal spacing of 60mm, as
indicated, but the total number of bolts is as yet unknown. Bolts will be used (and confirmed
on site) that result in the threads being excluded from the shear plane. Determine the total
number of A325 M20 bolts that are required to develop the factored tensile capacity of the
channel member, considering both member and connection checks. You may assume that the
gusset plate is adequate in all respects. Summarise your design by making a neat sketch of
the connection (do not use the figure provided for your summary sketch). Hint: Complete the
design neglecting block shear and then confirm that the joint will not fail in this mode (if it
does, you'll need to lengthen the connection accordingly).
Note: Topics 03 and 04 are very closely linked. You will need to look at the Tension Member
Connections notes up to page 6 to complete all parts of this question.
