Question: A steam turbine is to be designed using impulse stages. The inlet pressure is 10 bar absolute and 500C and outlets to a condenser
A steam turbine is to be designed using impulse stages. The inlet pressure is 10 bar absolute and 500C and outlets to a condenser at a pressure of 0.04bar absolute. At design stage the isentropic efficiency of the turbine (overall turbine isentropic efficiency not the stage efficiency) is taken as 80%. At design stage assume velocity coefficient to be unity (i.e. no frictional loss in velocity). All the stages are to have a nozzle outlet angle of 15 degrees, equal inlet and outlet blade angles, a mean blade speed of 250m/s and equal inlet and outlet steam velocities. Calculate the number of stages required.
