According to the first video for this week's discussion, Watch Green, Meet Your Master: Getting to Know
Question:
According to the first video for this week's discussion, "Watch Green, Meet Your Master: Getting to Know Your Brain," discussed several parts of the brain. One part of the brain that captured my attention was Cerebellum. Cerebellum which is also known as the "Little Brain" is located at the lower back of our head adjacent to the spinal cord that links up to the brain (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). This part of the brain caught my attention because it plays a huge role in our lives. For example, if we are trying to learn something new like swimming, riding a bicycle, or playing a new musical instrument. Cerebellum assists our body to adapt to these movements that require repetitions and practice. Cerebellum affects one's balance and posture, learning various movements, and movements related to speaking (Han & Seladi-Schulman, 2020). Even though the cerebellum is only a small part of our brain's total size, it is very important as it can affect us in a variety of ways.
After watching the "Watch, Three lesions, three Lives: Brain Lesions that Changed Science," several times, I can to the conclusion that I would be against utilizing brain lesions to further understand the functions of our brain. I am always a fan of learning something new about the human brain. However, I believe that we have the most advance and up-to-date technologies all over the world to enhance our understanding of the human brain. The neuroimaging techniques such as Electroencephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) help researchers tremendously to observe brain activities without performing painful or dangerous courses of action (Xue et al,. 2010).
Synaptic communication is when neurons communicate with each other to exchange information (Study Smarter, n.d.). The two different types of neurotransmitters are acetylcholine and biogenic amines (Sincero, 2013). These types of neurotransmitters have numerous behavioral disorders and psychological disorders. Acetylcholine affects our memory, being able to focus and learn. On the other hand, biogenic amines help the brain with movement, emotions, blood pressure, and behavior. Drugs such as heroin or marijuana imitate the natural neurotransmitter resulting in unusual messages being delivered through the system (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2022).
