Activity 3.7.4 - Cisco RV215W Layer 3 Setup

Activity Overview: Students will explore device manuals and online resources, and watch video demonstration of Cisco RV215W navigation/configuration. You will then research various Network configuration options of the RV215W, and configure Layer 3 settings on the RV215W.

Activity Outcomes: After completing this activity you should be able to

  1. Demonstrate initial set-up of a Cisco RV215W VPN Router
  2. Demonstrate Layer 3 configuration of a Cisco RV215W VPN Router

Part 1: Research the following RV215W configurations and explain their use (include in your deliverable):

  1. Networking - MAC Address cloning: (why may this be necessary when using the RV215W as your edge router/gateway?)
  2. Dashboard - LAN (Local Network) Interface: What are the two IPv6 addresses displayed? What are they used for?
  3. Status - Connected Devices: What are the listed addresses under "IPv6 NDP Table" used for? (There should be 6 address listed based upon configurations from Week 2)
  4. Networking - LAN - LAN Configuration - Why do you think the Cisco RV215W is incapable of utilizing subnet sizes larger than 255.255.255.0 regardless of the Class of IP?
  5. Networking - Routing: What is the difference between the operating modes "Gateway" and "Router"? Which would you utilize if adding the RV215W to your pre-existing home LAN?
  6. Networking - IP Mode: What variations of IPv4/IPv6 is the RV215W capable of operating with? Which do you think would be most appropriate based upon your current home LAN setup? Which do you think will be most appropriate in, say, 5 years?

Part 2: Configure these settings as described (Video guide/Admin Guide):

  7. DHCP Leased Client (Static DHCP): Use the Static DHCP function to lock your computer's IPv4 address down as a reserved DHCP client. (screenshot: Static DHCP table containing your computer's IP address/MAC address in the list)

  8. Networking - Routing: Configure the RV215W for a static route to your home network (this will not actually function, as they are not currently connected) (screenshot: configuration having been saved successfully) You can return the router to Gateway mode and delete the static route after completing configuration number 2.
  9. Networking - Routing Table: Take a screenshot of the current IPv4 routing table - you should see 5 destination LAN's with the appropriate IPv4 addresses configured in Week 2.
  10. Deliverables:

  12. Static Route configuration saved successfully (Green checkmark in top left of the page)
  13. Current IPv4 Routing Table which matches the VLAN/Subnet configurations from Week 2
  14. Written summary of research topics 1-6 in Part 1
