Activity 7: Local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community presentation

Using the information you have already gathered about the local Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community and by conducting further internet research or talking with key community members to find out more, make a presentation for your Trainer and Assessor about cultural safety and why it is important to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

You are to deliver the presentation to your Trainer and Assessor during the Workplace Skills Assessment Visit. The presentation must be approximately 3-to-5 minutes in duration and cover the following topics:

What is cultural safety?

Why is cultural safety important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

What does the organisation already do to contribute to strengthening of cultural safety for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people?

What other strategies could the organisation apply to further develop and strengthen their cultural safety practices?

Where can you find out more to build the capacity of the organisation to be a culturally safe organisation?

To support your presentation, create a presentation in PowerPoint (or in another presentation tool such as Prezi, Google slides or Canva) and a fact sheet (covering all the listed topics). You are to provide the fact sheet to your Trainer and Assessor as a handout during the presentation.

Before your Workplace Skills Assessment Visit, make arrangements with your Workplace Supervisor to access a small meeting room, lunchroom or other quiet area as appropriate to deliver the presentation. You may use a laptop or other device to support your delivery or talk to the handout you developed.

Your Trainer and Assessor will check you have:

explained what is meant by cultural safety

identified why it is important for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people - i.e. talked about the negative impacts of past Government policies and practices on Aboriginal peoples and current factors that impact on the community

culturally safe practices already in place at the organisation (you may include the organisation's cultural safety plan, if they have one)

your ideas for strengthening cultural safety

where you can find out more information to build the organisation's capacity to be a culturally safe organisation - i.e. professional networks, agencies, peak bodies, organisations, community leaders and/or publications etc.
