Objectives

Within the framework of the strategic management process, students are given the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the project selection process and to describe the financial and non-financial methods of project selection.

Instructions

The entire assignment should be 4- 5 pages long, double spaced (excluding title page and reference page) and should follow APA referencing style. Prepare your report in short answer format, providing responses to the various questions at the end of the case.

Scenario

You manage a large hotel on the South Beaches of the Kauai island of Hawaii. The owners of the property have shifted their strategic objective from the traditional all-inclusive fun-in-the-sun destination to eco-tourism which focuses on environmental awareness and education.

1. There are both financial and non-financial criteria that should be considered when selecting which projects are to be supported within an organization. Identify and describe three (3) financial and three (3) non-financial methods/criteria of project selection. Give three (3) reasons why an organization may support projects that do not have high/any profit margins.
2. Refer to the scenario above, how would you classify the following projects in terms of compliance, strategic, and operational? As part of your answer, give clear, detailed explanations as to why you have chosen the classifications that you have.
   1. Convert the pool heating system from electrical to solar power.
   2. Build a 4-mile nature hiking trail.
   3. Renovate the horse barn.
   4. Launch a new promotional campaign with Hawaii Airlines.
   5. Build a new Electronic Building Management System that automates the security system of the hotel
   6. Convert 12 adjacent acres into a wildlife preserve.
   7. Update all the bathrooms in the hotel that are over 10 years old.
   8. Change hotel brochures to reflect eco-tourism image.
   9. Test and revise disaster response plan.
   10. Introduce wireless internet services in caf and lounge areas.
3. Discuss how project selection might be different in an agile versus a plan-driven or traditional project management framework. Identify at least one of the projects in the Hawaii hotel scenario above that could be attempted using an agile project management methodology. Explain why you have made this selection, and state how you would execute that project using agile methodologies.
