This article starts out with an example that your rank within an organization doesnt necessarily mean you have power. Laura Esserman was a director of the Carol Franc Buck Breast Care Center at the University of California. When she came into the role she wanted to implement a new information system for treatment data and accelerate overall progress in treating breast cancer. But she quickly learned that this would be challenging since each department had their own priorities. Its definitely not always easy getting groups of people to align to a common goal. Some organizations may be easier to unite but depending on how your organization is set up, this can be extremely challenging. For example, my organization is set up by functions so while we have customer projects that we work on that all functions contribute to, at the end of the day the individual functions also have their own objectives and responsibilities. So it is sometimes challenging to get everyone aligned on the project goals.
Effectively using power can help change organizational behavior. There are several things that powerful people do to advance their agendas. One is utilizing resources. These include things like money, people, information and equipment. If you have these things within your control, utilize them as leverage with others in the organization to help you meet your objectives. This is a quid pro quo approach but it can be extremely useful. You can also shape behavior through rewards and punishments. This is a way to show others what happens if you do or dont so something. It can be a motivator to either take action or not to take action, depending on the outcomes. I think this is another useful tool as people want to understand what results their actions will have.
The article gives many other tips in how to exercise power. The rest include advance on multiple fronts, make the first more, co-opt antagonists, remove rivals, dont draw unnecessary firs, use the personal touch, persist, make important relationships work, make the vision compelling. One that I think is most important is using the personal touch. This involves going out of your way to meet with people face to face, giving a phone call rather than an email, and being prompt when getting back to people. These things seem small, but I think they really make a difference. I know at work when someone responds back to me quickly or comes by my office rather than just emailing me, I make sure I do the same for them. It also makes me want to get back to them or help them out more willingly. I think its a great tactic on how to use your power.
