The Case of Nicole Nicole is a 19-year-old African American woman who has come to the university counseling center. Upon meeting with the counselor, Nicole reports feeling "stressed out." She is often unable to fall asleep and, when she does sleep, often wakes in the middle of the night thinking about her studies and is unable to return to sleep. Nicole reports that she has begun to lose her appetite and, though she has always been a good student, her schoolwork is starting to suffer. She thinks, now, that she needs help. Nicole is the oldest sibling in a family of four girls and the first person in her family to go to college. She reports feeling a lot of "pressure to be successful" and that her family is very anxious for her to do well in school. Her mother works as a clerk for the federal government, and her father, who is recently retired from the army, works as an electrician. Nicole's sisters are both in high school, and she reports a good overall relationship with her family. She was raised to value the importance of education and knows that her parents want more for her than they themselves achieved. In school, Nicole has usually received good grades. She puts a lot of effort into her studying and works hard to do well on assignments. She was very excited, and a little scared, to go to college, leaving her family behind. She had a lot of anxiety about how she would "stack up" against other students and about whether she could handle the job. During high school, Nicole worked as a cashier at a gift shop. She enjoyed interacting with the customers but reports being disappointed that she never advanced to a different position at the shop. Last summer, she was able to get a temporary job at the local hospital as a surgery clerk. She enjoyed the fast-paced nature of the work and learned a lot about how the surgery department was run. Her interests outside of work and school are varied. She likes being outdoors, but doesn't consider herself to be "outdoorsy." She likes to read, watch movies, and write poetry.
