After this week session on Linux, we have expanded our knowledge on Linux even further from things like updating and installing packets, managing the system, and so forth. With all of that being said, CrowdStrike released an update which caused massive outages worldwide on Microsoft systems. What have we learned in our class so far?
Firstly, test anything new in a controlled environment, otherwise there can be major complications. CrowdStrike should have extensively tested their update before deploying it to make sure nothing like this would happen.
Secondly, with any kind of mass panicconfusion there will be people that will try and take advantage of this situation and in this case, that would be 'bad actors'. With the mistake that happened with CrowdStrike, I can only imagine the number of 'bad actors' that are trying phishing attacks or social engineering techniques to gain access sensitive information for their personal gain.
Lastly, before downloading anything or doing anything, make sure you have some sort of backup in place. CrowdStrike's team should have had many people overseeing these types of updates and finalizing the go ahead" for the deployment after everything was double checked and tested properly.
To me I feel like a major company like CrowdStrike would have had many different teams that would oversee the creation process of these types of updates. In the end, we are all human and every one of us can make an error that could potentially shutdown servers or computers worldwide.
what can you say about this? any idea to add more here?
