After working as a CNA for 7 years with the elderly, I've realized how important it is to understand the history of social welfare policies when providing care. In the past, social welfare policies often ignored or neglected older adults, assuming they were no longer capable or valuable. Many policies didn't focus on promoting their independence, and people with disabilities or aging issues were often left out of welfare services. By learning about this history, I can avoid repeating those mistakes and make sure I treat each resident with respect and fairness. Understanding this history also helps me provide person-centered care, which focuses on the individual needs and preferences of each person. In the past, social welfare policies often limited the choices of older adults, but today we know that many elderly people still want to be involved in decisions about their care and remain as independent as possible. Knowing the history of these policies will help me in the future to ensure that the care plans I create will support their choices and independence. It will also encourage me to advocate for policies that protect the rights and dignity of older adults, ensuring they get the care they truly deserve.
