agree or disagree with post below? why? 300 words or more

If a good manager were to shift from manufacturing to lets say being a restaurant manager, they would not be nearly as effective let alone if they could even do the job at all. Going from a technical role to a customer service role would be extremely difficult just based on the amount of knowledge need for each. The change in workers and attitudes would be very different and the workplace environment is different. However, there are some skills that would cross over and help to give them a chance at managing effectively.

The lack of industry knowledge would hinder the management potential of the new manager. Good managers are always looking forward and looking at the big picture however a new manager would not understand the big picture. I was a service department manager for a few years, and I was constantly looking ahead and planning for the future. But if you place me as a restaurant manager, I wouldnt know what I would be looking in the future for. Additionally, A good manager has to have the ability to motivate people and not having done the job before would make it challenging to find ways to motivate and encourage the workers (Williams, 2013). Lastly, low level and middle level managers require the technical knowledge of the job in order to be successful by switching fields they will lack the technical knowledge that they need in order to succeed (Syckle & Tietje, 2010).

Managers do have a large number of common skills such as time management, planning, communication and leadership which help them to be effective and successful. All of the skills listed before are more or less universal skills and can be applied in any application. Take communication if a manager can effectively pass along information and has good social skills those will travel from job to job help them no matter what the industry (Anjum , 2014).

Overall, A good manager transferred to a new industry would not succeed however if given a little bit of training and time they should be able to succeed based on the skills they already possessed by being a good manager.
