Analyze and develop an argument about the how the author of the text you choose to analyze uses rhetorical or argumentative strategies to build their argument. You may also consider development strategies such as organization, as well as the kinds of evidence the author uses to advance their claims.

In short, you should develop a specific argument about how and why the author uses these strategies to advance a specific argument, and what makes the strategies effective in the given rhetorical context. In order to do so, you will need to briefly explain what the argument is, in order to explain how this argument is made. You will need to support your argument using textual evidence, which can include summary, paraphrase, and direct quotation. Make sure that you have a thesis statement that advances a specific, coherent, and manageable argument, that you express in a concise manner.

Examples of rhetorical elements include: exigence, context, audience, rhetor, constraints or resources, topic, and genre.

Examples of rhetorical appeals include: ethos, pathos, logos.

Examples of argumentative strategies include: establishing common ground, acknowledging the strengths of opposing viewpoints, demonstrating the weaknesses of opposing viewpoints.

Examples of evidence include: facts and statistics, anecdotes, the use of authorities or experts, etc.

Note: You do not need to address all of these elements. Remember, specific arguments are narrow and focused. You do not need to address all of the strategies the author uses, but rather should develop an argument a focused argument about why the strategy/strategies you discuss are effective.
