Analyze the following conflict situation. Explain how you would handle the con- flict based on what you read about the three stages of conflict management. In particular, answer the following questions: 1. What is the source of the conflict(s)? 2. Is this a case for mediation, arbitration, dictation, or negotiation? 3. What do you think are some of the feelings all parties might be having? In a small university, the English department was in conflict with Administra- tion because, unbeknownst to the English department, Administration had changed some of the core courses the English department was required to offer to students. Administration claimed the English department knew about the changes; the English department denied that they had been communicated with. In fact, the English department alleged they had no input into any of the changes and that the changes would cause hardship not only to the professors but to the students enrolled in the English program. Over the last 2 years, the English department has had various disagreements with Administration over how policy was being carried out. In particular, the English department had several run-ins with one particular administrator and his clerical staff who consistently made errors in the English department's purchase requisitions. Numerous complaints were made about this staff person to the administrator but the staff continued to make mistakes. Administration recently heard that the English department had hired a lawyer to assist them in a grievance against the university for changing the rules in mid-semester. Administration requested a meeting with the department chair and key faculty but faculty refused to meet with them. The question is, is there an alternative to resolving this situation outside of court? Analyze the following conflict situation.
