Case Analysis2: The Social Media Policy Decision CASE The Consider Alberta Agency is a government agencythat is responsible for marketing Alberta as a good place for companies to operate their business or open a new business. One of the highest priorities of the President of the company is to recruit educated and high-potential employees for their growing agency. During a recent recruiting drive at universities and colleges, some potential applicants candidly stated that the Alberta government seems out of touch with the younger generation, particularly in the use of technology. A few observed that the agency's website doesn't provide much recruitment information, and they couldn't find the department's Facebook, Twitter, or any other social media sites. These comments lead the President to think about developing a social media policy for the Consider Alberta Agency. This policy will address to what degree the agency will allow or possibly even encourage its staff to have work-related social medial sites and to participate in those sites during work hours. The President knows very little about social media, although many of their direct reports (managers and team leaders) have varying degrees of knowledge about the variety of social media sites the company could use. A few have their own social media sites and one Manager has herown travel blog. Some direct reports have been strongly opposed to social media in the workplace, whereas others are very supportive. The President is convinced that a social media presence is important to their company so decides to make a quick decision. The company develops a Facebook site to attract younger workers to apply for their positions. A lot of time and effort is invested in building the site, and the President is convinced the site will increase the quality and quantity of applications. No other social media sites are considered. But once the site is launched and after a few months of the site being live, the President is surprised to learn that the youngerdemographic the company is looking to attract isn't being attracted through the agency's Facebook site. The President believes the site just needs more time and dedicates the site will increase the quality and quantity of applications. No other social media sites are considered. But once the site is launched and after a few months of the site being live, the President is surprised to learn that the younger demographic the company is looking to attract isn't being attracted through the agency's Facebook site. The President believes the site just needs more time and dedicate a team of individuals to work on improving the agency's Facebook site. After 6 months, there is no change to the number of applications they are receiving from younger workers. The President doesn't understand what has gone wrong and discusses the issue with his management team. One of his manager's ask why the company only choose Facebook and if other alternatives were considered. The President is angered by this question and states that "Facebook was a good decision. Its not that we choose the wrong social media platform. The problem is we aren't doing enough with our Facebook site. We have invested too much time and effort not to make this site work!". The President's management team believe there is another solution, but the President won't listen so the Agency continues with Facebook. During the same time, the President also implements a new Social Media policy that does not allow employees to use social media in the workplace unless they are using the Facebook site for recruitment The President didn't consult with his management team before putting the policy in place and now the agency's goals to attract university and college students to their workforce is providing difficult to achieve. As well, one the agency does attract younger, tech-savvy employees to the agency, they become discouraged because any of their creatives idea on how to use social media to advertise agency programs aren't listened to. The agency doesn't believe the employees can still be productive if they are allowed to use social media in the workplace to conduct their business. New employees also begin I to feelthe agency has lost touch with the younger generation so turnover in the agency tends to be high. As these problems begin to arise, the President reflects on their decision to incorporate social media in the workplace and wonders where they went wrong. Social media seemed like the answer to the agency's problems but now the President views the use of social media as the problem. The President strongly considers ending the use of social media in the agency. .
