AP Physics 1 Static Electricity Assignment Introduction To investigate static electricity using a balloon, and some Scotch tape. Materials A latex (not metallic) balloon filled with air . A roll of normal Scotch brand tape Procedure Take several pieces of tape off the roll about 6 inches long (10 cm). a) Stick two pieces onto a desk or chair with part of the piece hanging down. Now quickly pull them off the chair (desk) and holding one piece in each hand, bring your hands close together. Do the pieces of tape interact (attract or repel)? b) Stick two pieces of tape together sticky side to sticky side. Now pull them quickly apart. Take one piece in each hand and bring them close together. Do they attract or repel? d) Rub the balloon in your hair. Redo experiments a, b, and c, and see how they interact with the balloon. You may have to refresh the charge on the balloon every now and then. Attach the balloon to wall ceiling or chair.
