Task: To apply and finish laminate to a storage box by hand to cover the external surfaces. Work specifications: - Storage box dimensions:
- Length - 300 mm
- Width - 202 mm
- Height - 112 mm
- Thickness - 12 mm
- Lamination requirements - Laminate edging and joints
- Type of lamination - Acrylic Laminate
- Adhesive - PVA adhesive
- Adhesive application method - Use a brush and a scraper
Materials used: - Acrylic Laminate
- PVA adhesive
Tools and equipment used: - Brush -Used to apply PVA adhesive evenly across the surface of the storage box and the back of the laminate.
- Laminate cutter -Necessary for cutting the acrylic laminate to the precise dimensions required for the storage box.
- Laminate trimmer -Used to trim any excess laminate from the edges of the storage box after application, providing a neat and precise finish.
- Laminate roller -Useful for pressing the laminate onto the storage box surface to ensure it adheres smoothly and firmly, helping to eliminate any air bubbles between the laminate and the box.
- Scraper - Used to apply adhesive, smoothing out any excess adhesive, especially for edges and corners.
Work instructions: Step 1 - Surface preparation - Clean the storage box thoroughly to remove any dust, dirt, or oily residues. Lightly sand it with fine-grit sandpaper to improve adhesive bonding.
- Wipe down the storage box with a tack cloth or a slightly damp cloth to remove all sanding dust and ensure a clean surface.
Step 2 - Measure and cut laminate - Measure the external dimensions of each side of the storage box, including the front face and all sides that will be visible.
- Note the dimensions of the corners or joints if they require separate pieces of laminate to ensure a seamless appearance.
- Transfer these measurements to the acrylic laminate, adding a small margin (about 2-3 mm) to each piece for precise fitting and trimming.
- Use laminate cutters to carefully cut the laminate according to these measurements. Ensure cuts are clean and straight to prevent any chipping.
Step 3 - Apply adhesive - Stir the PVA adhesive well to ensure it is evenly mixed.
- Using a brush - Apply a thin, even layer of adhesive to the surface of the storage box and on the back of each piece of the cut laminate using a brush.
- Using a Scraper - Apply adhesive to the edges and corners of the storage box using a scraper to ensure a precise application.
- Pay special attention to the edges and corners where the laminate will join. Apply a slight excess of adhesive here to ensure a strong bond at the joints.
Step 4 - Place and adjust laminate - Carefully position the acrylic laminate on all sides of the storage box, starting from one side and gradually moving to the other sides.
- Press the laminate into place, starting from the centre of each piece and moving outward to push out any air bubbles.
- For the corners or joints, ensure that the pieces of laminate align precisely and that there is no gap or overlap. Adjust as necessary before the adhesive sets.
Step 5: Laminate Edging - Apply laminate to the first edge of the storage box using the same method as in step 4, ensuring the edge is smooth and securely adhered.
- Apply laminate to the second edge of the storage box, following the same procedure to ensure proper alignment and adhesion.
Step 6: Laminate Joints - Position two pieces of laminate to create a joint on one edge of the storage box.
- Ensure the joint is aligned correctly and press firmly.
- Use the laminate roller to ensure a smooth finish and that the joint is secure.
Step 7 - Secure and finish - Use a laminate roller or a clean, dry cloth to press down firmly on the laminate, ensuring it adheres well to the box and that there are no air pockets.
- Pay extra attention to the joints and edges, using additional pressure to bond the laminate securely.
Step 8 - Trim excess - Once the adhesive starts to set, use a laminate trimmer or a sharp utility knife to trim any excess laminate around the edges.
- Carefully trim at the joints to ensure a neat and flush finish.
Step 9 - Final inspection and clean-up - Inspect the laminated storage box for any loose edges or misaligned laminate, especially at the joints. Apply additional adhesive under the laminate if necessary.
- Wipe away any excess adhesive with a damp cloth before it fully dries
Step 10 - Curing and maintenance - Allow the adhesive to cure completely, before handling the storage box.
- Keep the box flat during curing to avoid bending or warping the laminate.
|
- The surface should be uniform and defect-free after preparation to ensure optimal adhesive bonding.
- The adhesive should reach the appropriate level of tackiness before applying the laminate to avoid slippage or weak bonding.
- The laminate must be accurately measured and cut, ensuring it fits precisely on the box with minimal gaps at the joints.
- The laminate should be applied without any bubbles, wrinkles, or misalignments, ensuring a smooth and flat appearance.
- All edges and joints must be trimmed cleanly, ensuring a seamless and aesthetically pleasing finish.
- The final product should look uniform in colour and texture, with no visible defects such as scratches, dents, or discoloration.

- Wear appropriate PPE
- Handle PVA adhesive in a well-ventilated area to avoid inhalation of any fumes
- Avoid skin contact with the adhesive; if contact occurs, wash the area immediately with soap and water
- Ensure that all cutting tools are sharp and in good condition to prevent accidents caused by tool malfunction or excessive force.
- Handle and operate cutting tools with care, following the manufacturer's guidelines to avoid injuries.
- Keep the work area clean and free of clutter to prevent accidents, such as tripping over materials or tools
- Ensure that all spills, especially adhesive, are cleaned up immediately to prevent slipping
- Avoid rushing the measuring, cutting, and application processes to prevent mistakes and injuries
- Be mindful of body positioning and ergonomics while working to prevent strain and discomfort
