Barista1 is working in the sandwich preparation, Barista2 is working in the coffee preparation, and Barista3 is responsible for the payment process. Sandwich preparation times are distributed as TRIA (1.4,2.9,5.5) minutes, whereas the payment process lasts for UNIF (1,2) minutes. The time to prepare coffee orders depends on the choice. 80% of the customers prefer to order filter coffee whose preparation lasts for TRIA (1.2,1.5,2.2) minutes, and the other remaining 20% prefer to order espresso whose preparation time is distributed as UNIF (3,4). For all customers, the payment process comes after the sandwich and coffee preparation processes. After the payment process, the customers leave the system. Additionally, a Type 2 customer who will order both a sandwich and a coffee enter the sandwich preparation process first, before the coffee preparation. Customers in each process' queue are served according to first in first out (FIFO) queuing discipline, and one barista can serve one customer at a time. The management of the coffee shop is interested in improving the performance of this system and hires you to conduct a simulation study. a) Model the system on ARENA, run the simulation for the working hours in a day and report the following. i. Average and maximum waiting time for each queue in the system ii. Utilization of each barista iii. Average and maximum total time spent in the system for each customer type iv. Number of customers served b) The manager wants you to evaluate the potential effects of increasing the level or quality of the resources in the coffee shop. Given the limited funds, only one change is affordable. Three alternatives that can be pursued with the amount of available funds are as follows: 1) The filter coffee machine will be renewed. If so, the coffee preparation times for customers who will purchase filter coffee will decrease and become TRIA (0.9,1.2,1.7). 2) The toaster can be renewed. If so, the sandwich preparation time for Type 2 customers will become TRIA (1.0,2.2,4.3) minutes. Model these two alternative changes on ARENA for the considered system separately. Report the output measures i, ii, iii, and iv for these alternatives and analyze the alternatives according to the output measures.
