Let me explain again what the degree of feedom (df) is. The df is the number of scores in a sample that are free to vary to reflect variability in the population. One statistician said df can be considered as a correction factor. For example, if n = 14 for a group of subjects, the df would be n - 1 = (14 - 1) = 13. As you see the df yielded is a slightly smallernumber. In statistical calculation when you divide by 13, the outcome will be slightly larger answer than when you divide by 14. Example 26/13 = 2 , but 26/14 = 1.8. The 2 is slightly larger than the 1.8 and is considered a more accurate estimate of the variability of the population.
In ANOVA, the df, as you see in Table 4, is two values. One value is forbetween groupsand the other value is forwithin groups. The first df value is 3; the 3 is [4 groups: days, evenings, nights, and rotating- 1) = 3forbetween groups. The other df number is 1638for the first variable (group cohesion). This number is obtained by subtracting the 4 groups fromthe total number of participants who were considered in the computation for group cohesion [1642- 4 groups] = 1638. This second value for df is forwithin groups. As you see from the table the df forwithin groupsfor the different variables are different because probably the number of participants who were included in the computation were different. In another way, missing data account for the variability of the n for each variable.
