As a team, you will produce a Debate Document. Due to the asynchronous nature of the course, each team will submit a debate document (outlined below) that explains their major arguments in support of their side of the debate and the facts supporting each of these arguments. The document should also outline the anticipated major arguments of the opposing team and the planned rebuttal. It should also include a list of references (this will not to be counted toward your page limit). The document can be NO LONGER than four double-spaced pages. To make the debate fair among teams, nothing will be considered/read over four pages. A suggested template is below. Introduction Statement of the proposition and your groups position Origin, history, and importance of the issuekeep it brief Outline the conflicting argumentswhy is there a controversy? Discussion (This is the major section of your analysis) List arguments to support your position Back up your arguments with sound reasoning and evidence Make sure you are using GOOD and RELIABLE sources. These will be checked as part of your final grade! Use news sources, SHRM, and academic journal articles. List anticipated arguments of the opposing position Based on your research and your current position, what do you think your opponent is going to argue? Think critically about this! Back up those anticipated arguments with sound reasoning and evidence Describe why the opponents logic or ideas are not the best, think about where the holes in their arguments might be, etc. Conclusion Summarize the main points of the discussionrecap your major points End with an affirmation or denial of the proposition (depending on whether you have the affirmative or the negative position) Reference List in APA format this does not count towards your page limit. Id suggest at least five sources. Recommendations for Structuring the Debate Document Rely on your rhetorical skills and concentrate on developing a persuasive set of arguments that will convince your audience that you have conducted a thorough analysis of the debate and that your side should be selected (see next section). Remember who your audience is. Not only will you be evaluated by the instructor based on your knowledge of the topic, but you will also be evaluated by other students in the class. In general, teams should ensure their arguments are presented in a logical and respectful manner. Please ensure that your Debate Document relies on current research, and not simply the opinions of team members. Teams are expected to thoroughly research their topic, consulting current periodicals, academic sources, and/or, to a limited extent, sources from the Internet. Strive to demonstrate throughout that you understand and can appropriately apply the course material but do not simply repeat material covered in the text or class. Recommendations on how to craft a persuasive appeal Whether we are aware of them or not, our ability to convince others depends in many ways our ability master three primary forms of persuasive appeals in classic rhetoric. These three appeals, derived from the work of Aristotle include Ethos, Pathos, and Logos and make up what is commonly known as the rhetorical triangle. By incorporating these appeals into your arguments, you increase your ability to persuade others and improve the overall quality of your debate. Logos: appeals to logic, reasoning, or evidence. (e.g., facts, data/statistics, structure of speech, comparisons, analogies, and metaphors) Pathos: appeals that often incorporates emotions or core values (e.g., stories, examples, vivid language, and use of emotion) Ethos: appeals made on the basis of ones character, reputation, goodwill, or ethics and can also include establishing credentials (e.g., tone, writing style, citing credible sources, and overall confidence in delivery)
