As this week's readings emphasize, summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting are essential techniques for working with sources in academic writing. Mastering these techniques will not only help you avoid plagiarism but also generate stronger writing for research papers and many other kinds of writing.

    1. The original post, followed by a full APA reference for the post. (See the tip below for how to do this.)
    2. A short paragraph about the post that includes a summary, paraphrase, and quotation of the original.

Repeat the above for the 2nd post you chose.

Finally, write a paragraph evaluating the process of creating your summaries, paraphrases, and quotations.

Original Post #1: Who are the experts, technicians, executives, and Non specialists that nurses most frequently communicate with? Come up with 1-2 examples for each type of audience.

Experts that nurses mostly communicate with would be doctors and specialists. Technicians that nurses frequently communicate with are x ray technicians, lab technicians, and technical support for computers. Examples of executives that nurses communicate with on a regular basis would be administrators and state employees. Nonspecialists would include the patients, family members or friends of patients.

  • Which of these audience types do you think is easiest to communicate with as a nurse? Why?

I think the easiest to communicate with would be non-specialists. We are explaining to them what is going on and why things are being done. We speak to them on their level which I feel is easier then communicating with the others.

  • Which audience type seems most difficult to communicate with? Why?

I feel the most difficult to communicate with is executives. I feel if they don't have any medical experience they don't understand what it is like to work on a floor with patients. They try to make changes that they don't realize are not more beneficial. Another thing is when you try to communicate difficulties with things they don't always understand.

  • Finally, share one tip or strategy for effective communication with one of these audience-types.

I think the number one tip for effective communication with nonspecialists is being honest. Working has an LVN for so long it is important to have the trust of your patients and their friends and family members. When they are given inaccurate information it can be frustrating for them and makes them question all the care they are getting. Its best to tell them if your not sure about something or if you need to find out the information instead of just making it up.

Original Post #2: Hello Everyone!

1. Who are the experts, technicians, executives, and nonspecialists that nurses most frequently communicate with? Come up with 1-2 examples for each type of audience.

  • Experts: Physicians, Nurse Practitioners.
  • Technicians: Radiology Technicians, Lab Technicians.
  • Executives: Hospital Administrators, Department Heads.
  • Nonspecialists: Patients, Patient Families.

2. Which of these audience types do you think is easiest to communicate with as a nurse? Why?

I feel like Technicians are usually the easiest to talk to because they have a clinical background and need clear, technical instructions. They understand medical terms and procedures like nurses do, which makes communication straightforward and well organized.

3. Which audience type seems most difficult to communicate with? Why?

I would have to say Nonspecialists, such as patients and families, are the hardest to talk to because they often don't have medical knowledge and due to whatever circumstance they are dealing with or their family member is dealing with, they can be really emotional. Nurses usually have to simplify complex information and be sensitive to their feelings, which can be tough. A personal example of this would be when my son was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. We had to stay in the hosptial for about 3 days to learn all the information needed to care for him. The nurses and specialist had to essentially "dumb" down the information for all of us to understand it. We had to take several breaks because there was so much information it was overwhelming, and my partner was very emotional / and she is pregnant so she really could not handle all the stress and flood of information being thrown at us at once..

Share one tip or strategy for effective communication with one of these audience types.

Tip for effective communication with nonspecialists: Use simple language and visual aids (videos were the most helpful for my partner and I when learning about type 1 diabetes) to explain medical stuff, so it's easier to understand and less stressful. This way, you can help close the knowledge gap and make people feel more at ease.
