As your research up to this point has probably informed you, there is a lot of theory out there about strategy. Strategy is a lot like leadership, everyone has a different definition and there are many nuances. One of the things we have not talked about much has been purpose. I like to say strategy begins with purpose. Purpose comes before mission, values, and vision because it answers the question, why will your organization make a difference? Purpose emphasizes how an organization should view and conduct itself. Purpose addresses what are you doing for someone else. An organizations purpose should connect the heart with the head it should be motivational to all who read it or hear it. The attached Youtube video is a short clip of President Eisenhower visiting the American Military Cemetery at Normandy 20 years after the D-Day invasion. In this short clip, he describes the purpose of the invasion. You dont hear profound words like this very often and I just thought you might like to hear what an inspiring purpose sounds like. For sure most of us will not have to mount an operation like D-Day but we should all try our best to inspire and encourage others. Feel free to comment. Substantive responses will count toward participation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_gz_Di-TzFo
