But now due to COVID19 situation, the company is badly affected and goes through a tough time in the marketplace, and so top management is thinking to reduce its employment The following options have been offered by the company to the employees in this uncertain situation: 1. Furlough leave/Leave without Pay. This could be attractive option to several bright young engineers who want to protect their jobs. 2. Last in and first out. This could result in the loss of young and more versatile operators. 3. Early retirement of those within 10 years of their normal retirement age. This could cause a loss of engineers with valuable product knowledge. 4. Termination on based of performance: This could lead to unfair selection, as the uniform performance appraisal system has been operating in the company only for the last few years. Demonstrate your knowledge of leading function of engineering management to decide what methods, or combination of methods, should the company use to scale down its workforce keeping in view the financial constraints of the company due to this current pandemic situation. Being a responsible engineering manager/leader, what more options/methods of downsizing you can offer for your employees. Do some brainstorming and derive a set of different criteria needed to make the decision.
