ASS Task 04 Plan, design and develop an assessment tool (RPL)

Introduction

This task is based on a case study scenario that we provide.

Task overview

Complete the activities in this document:

- using a soft copy of this document to type responses (under supervision of your TAE assessor, to ensure authenticity)

You will also need to finalise the key documents you produce for this task by creating standalone, typed versions of:

- Assessment plan

- Assessment tool, including competency map

- Report on the trial of your draft assessment tool

The assessment tool you develop must be suitable for the assessment context and support ABC Training House's assessment system policies and procedures.

The assessment tool must include:

- Information and instructions for candidates

- Clear and complete instructions for assessors that explain how to administer the assessment tool, judge evidence and make a decision of competence

- Instruments that:

include at least 2-3 assessment methods or forms of evidence that are suitable for the context and the unit assessed

collectively cover the entire unit and its assessment requirements

- Provision to record details of the assessment and the results

- A competency map or equivalent that clearly shows how the assessment instruments collectively cover the entire unit and its assessment requirements.

You must trial the first draft of your assessment tool, prepare a report on the trial, then create the final version of the assessment tool, incorporating improvements identified in the trial.

A TAE assessor must verify foundation skills you use to plan, design, develop, trial and finalise each assessment tool.

Part A:

Work individually or with up to two other TAE participants to:

1. Determine the assessment approach and context

2. Prepare the RPL assessment plan

3. Develop a draft assessment tool to support your assessment plan.

Part B:

4. Trial your draft assessment tool:

Assess competence using your draft assessment tool (another TAE participant will act as your candidate in the trial)

Gather feedback about the draft assessment tool from your trial candidate

Type a report on the trial of your assessment toolyour report will summarise the outcomes of the trial and list improvements you will make when finalising your assessment tool.

5. Ask TAE assessor to complete the Evidence of Foundation Skills checklist.

6. Review and reflectcomplete the questionnaire in this section.

Part C:

7. Finalise your assessment tool and submit your work for this taskfollow the instructions provided.

Keep all paperwork related to this task in a safe place! You will need to submit it on Moodle as part of your portfolio of evidence for this task.

The scenario

The context

You are a trainer and assessor for ABC Training House, an RTO. ABC Training House's clients are members of the public who:

may or may not be working, although most clients are working in some capacityfull time, part time or casual, in paid or volunteer positions

have diverse characteristics, industry expertise, experience and needs:

- LLN and other foundation skills they hold will vary

- some may have disabilities that will require a reasonable adjustment.

The current situation

ABC Training House has recently undertaken a review of its RPL assessment processes and has decided that they want to refresh their RPL assessment tools.

They have asked you to plan, design and develop an RPL assessment tool for the unit of competency:BSBTEC201 Use business software applications. The RPL tool that you develop will be used as a prototype for other RPL assessment tools that ABC Training House intends to develop later.

Your brief

Using this handout and the templates provided, produce:

an RPL assessment plan for that is valid, reliable and flexible enough to meet the varied needs of ABC Training House's clients

the RPL assessment tool that supports your RPL assessment plan.

1. Determine the assessment approach

Instructions

Determine the assessment approach. To do this, answer the questions below, based on the scenario information on the previous page.

Questions for consideration

1. Who are the target candidates?

How many people will be assessed?

What do we know about the candidatesWhat industry are they from? What key characteristics should we consider? What specific needs might they have? How might they prefer to be assessed?

2. What is the purpose and context of the RPL assessmentwhy might candidates apply for RPL in this unit?

3. What are the assessment benchmarksi.e. what unit of competence will be covered in the assessment plan and tool?

BSBTEC201 Use business software applications

4. Is there an overarching training and assessment strategy (TAS) that you should use to inform and guide development of the assessment plan and tool?

There is no overarching TAS that applies to this RPL plan and tool.

5. What assessment system policies and procedures should you incorporate into the assessment plan and tool?

6. Who might to be involved inor informed ofthe assessment?

Consider who must approve the plan, who will assess candidates, who might support candidates and who should be informed of the assessment.

7. What safety issues must be considered?

Consider physical and psychological safety implications of the assessment.

8. Other than the unit/s of competence and training and assessment strategy (if applicable), what other documentation will you use to inform and guide development of the assessment plan and tool?

Consider advice available from the training package developer, ABC Training House and elsewhere.

9. What elsemight affect the assessment plan or tool?

2. Complete a RPL assessment plan

Build a picture of competence and identify evidence

Instructions

1. Analyse and contextualise the unit and its assessment requirements Analyse the unit and its assessment requirements to identify:

a. contextualisation needed to ensure assessment is appropriate, given the target candidates' circumstances and needs

b. foundation skills needed for competence.

Refer to any advice offered by the training package developers or other relevant agencies to inform development of your assessment tool.

To show your work, write or type comments about contextualisation on your copy of the unit of competency and its assessment requirements.

See examples of analysed and contextualised competency standards in the participant manual.

Keep a copy of your analysed and contextualised unit (and assessment requirements)in a safe place. You will need to submit them with your portfolio for this task.

2. Identify the evidence that you will ask RPL candidates to provide. Consider your target candidates' circumstances and key characteristics. In the space below, list ideas for evidence that:

candidates will likely be able to provide, given their current circumstances

meet all requirements competency.

Refer to your copy of the unit and its assessment requirements.

Contingency management skills
Job/role environment skills

4. Consider the rules of evidence By completing the previous activities, you have identified valid and sufficient evidence for assessment. Now, think about how you can ensure your assessment plan and tool will produce:

Current evidence (describe at least one idea below):

Authentic evidence (describe at least one idea below):

Identify assessment activities and timeframes

Instructions

1. First, consolidate your ideas from the previous activity. To do this, in the space below, list the RPL evidence that candidates will need to provide to meet competency requirements:

2. Then, decide your assessment activities and timeframes. To do this:

decide how, when, where, and by whom the RPL evidence you list above will be gathered

in the space below, list the RPL assessment activities and timeframesin order, step-by-step:

Choose activities and timeframes that will ensure the assessment is valid, reliable, flexible and fair to your target candidate/s.
