Individual Assessment
Assessment Name: Professional Application (Individual Assessment)
Course Code: OENG1166
Assessment Weighting: 20%
Assessment Due Date: Sunday 2nd June 2024, by 11:59pm
Assessment Limits: 3 pages maximum
This assessment supports the following Course Learning Outcomes (CLO):
CLO 1- Identify principles, attributes, behaviors and responsibilities expected of professional engineers.
CLO 2- Work effectively in a team as well as manage yourself.
CLO 3- Apply a design process, project management, risk management and decision-making techniques to engineering design tasks.
Overview
Over the semester you have completed a Design Project and you will have submitted the major external deliverable, the Design Proposal, to the client. As discussed in Lecture Topic 5- Being an Engineering completing purposeful reflection after a significant or novel project is important especially when you are in the early stages of your career. Incorporating this reflection into your personal / or professional development plan can help you get the most out of your work experience. Being able to reflect on and then communicate how you have developed as a professional will help you when applying for engineering jobs.
For this assessment, you should consider the scenario where you are applying for an undergraduate engineering job at a major (but fictional) engineering consultancy. Part of the job application process is to create a document which includes your response to the Key Selection Criteria contained within a Position Description for the job. It is your response to the Key Selection Criteria that you will submit as this assessment.
Your tutor will take on the role of the recruiter and will determine how strong your responses are. The Key Selection Criteria in the Position Description are phrased in such a way that you can use your experience from this course in your responses. In fact, you are restricted to using your experience gained from this course. The purpose of this assessment task is to determine your achievement of course learning outcomes but also to provide you with a set of responses (plus valuable feedback) which you can use in future real world job applications.

Task
For this assessment task you should individually prepare and submit a document which includes your personal response to the Key Selection Criteria provided in the Position Description Download Position Description. You are not required to prepare a cover letter or submit a CV. You only need to submit one document which responds to the Key Selection Criteria which is why it is recommended you use the IPEP24- AT4- Template - Response to Key Selection Criteria.docxDownload IPEP24- AT4- Template - Response to Key Selection Criteria.docx
Your response to Key Selection Criteria submission is all about how you can demonstrate your professional engineering skills that you have gained or enhanced during just this course OENG1166 Introduction to Professional Engineering Practice. Your responses must be linked back to the activities of the course and your experiences within it.
For this assessment you are expected to provide roughly two / thirds of a page response to each key selection criteria, for a two - three page total document.

Assessment Criteria, Tips and Support
You will be assessed on your ability to:
Identify and reflect on the key competencies you have developed during the course.
Communicate a demonstration of the professional behaviours expected of engineers
Demonstrate the design process that has been followed and where original thinking has been applied.
Incorporate feedback that was provided on your professionalism throughout the course.
As this might not be something you have done before there are a few tips and tricks:
Do not include theory based responses e.g. do not provide a textbook answer for what is important in teamwork, you are expected to provide your own experiences with teamwork and demonstrate that you did those things.
You need to talk about what you did and not talk about what the whole team did. Don't forget that the recruiter reading your responses is trying to determine if they should hire just you (not your entire design team). If you hide your accomplishments and contributions by using the word 'we' a lot then you make it hard for the recruiter to determine what you have done and what skills you have.
