CASE STUDY: TELEVISTACOM
TelevistaCom, a large telecommunications company, approached your consulting team to assist it in diagnosing organisational problems and selecting appropriate OD interventions to improve its performance and effectiveness. As part of this organisation development effort, you are responsible for collecting, analysing and feeding information back to members of the organisation.
Owing to the size of the organisation, you suggested to the CEO that data be collected and fed back to the organisation through the use of a questionnaire or survey. Consequently, the organisational diagnostic questionnaire was administered to large groups of people simultaneously to collect data. An analysis of the data gathered revealed the following organisational problems:
Ongoing conflict between members of the organisation; apathy and a general lack of member interest; increasing complaints within the group; confusion about assignments; a lack of innovation and initiative; and increasing complaints from those outside the group about the quality, timeliness and effectiveness of services and products.
Employee absenteeism and turnover have increased over the last six months, while productivity has decreased significantly. Several members indicated that they have been experiencing various health-related problems, such as high blood pressure, poor concentration, burnout, anxiety and withdrawal.
Feedback meetings with members of the organisation were scheduled to discuss the data, draw relevant conclusions and devise preliminary action plans. After identifying the causes of problems and/or opportunities for development, your consulting team agreed to meet with the client to start planning and implementing the changes necessary to improve organisational performance.
In preparation for your meeting with the client, you decide to compile a report in which you address a few issues regarding OD interventions.
