Assignment #$1-$ MINI DESIGN BOOK$-$ Principles and Elements $(25\%)$

Description: In design terms elements are the distinct parts that make up a complex whole, they are the visual 'ingredients' in any art$/$craft$/$design$.$ Design principle is the 'how to$\text{'}$ or the 'recipe' of a design. The book will have two distinct parts. The first part of the book will be created in class through our exploration design elements and foundational mediums. The second part will consist of photographs beside explanations of the design principles at work. The final product will be a Design book that details the elements and principles in concrete and illustrative ways.

First, together we will participate in various foundational activities that explore the elements of design. Each activity will correspond to the lesson and demo of the day.

Guided activities include:

Blind Contour Drawing

Negative Space Study

Shape $/$ Pattern Creation

Texture study $/$ Frottage

Basic tonal study$/$ color wheel

Self$-$guided activity:

The second part of the book will consist of seven photographs that you take with your smart phone or camera that correspond to the seven design principles. You will find these photographs in class, in college, outside in nature and wherever you feel inspired to capture in your everyday environment. Each photo may contain various principles and elements; however, you are asked to highlight one in your framing and writing about the photo. Please write where this photo was taken $($context$)$ and write a brief paragraph on the various elements that support that principle of design. Photographs and their support paragraphs will be pasted in your DESIGN BOOK.

All activities for the completion of this book will be supported in class $-$ however it is encouraged to look outside the school environment for the photographs.
