Assignment 1: Response piece on a visual art work of your choice

Select an art work from any period of art history (it can be a painting, sculpture, installation etc.) and write a response piece on it. (A guide to writing a response piece is provided below). Make sure you embed an image of your selected art work in your assignment. Also identify the artist, the time period in which it was created, the medium used (e.g. oil paints, charcoal, graphite, marble etc), and if the art work is classified as belonging to a particular movement (e.g. Impressionism, Surrealism etc.). Other than this basic information, DO NOT plagiarise material from the internet I want to know YOUR thoughts, not someone elses. Consider the following when articulating your response piece:

Why did you select this particular art work? What attracted you to it?

Comment on the technique/style. What kind of colour palette can you identify?

Is the style realist, abstract, impressionistic etc.?

Does the style or imagery remind you of any other visual material you might have seen before?

Does the art work tell a story?

Does it appeal to you in a purely visual sense (i.e. is it just well painted?) or does it have emotional/intellectual appeal as well?
