Assignment 2-Sheet Pile Wall, Ultimate Limit State
Given: A sheet pile wall should be installed for a new residential building. The
excavation depth for the basements is 6,8m below the ground level. The sheet
pile wall is tied back with anchors on two levels placed 1,3 and 4,5m below the
ground level. The soil consists of clay and sand with properties according to the
table below. The ground water table is located below the toe of the sheet piles.
The bearing capacity of the anchors is 500 and 700 kN on anchor level 1 and 2
respectively. The yield stress of the sheet piles and the wale beams is 355 and
275 MPa . The inclination of the anchors is 45.
Find: The length of the sheet piles with respect to rotation stability around the first
anchor level before the installation of the second anchor level (excavation stage),
the spacing between the anchors on both anchor levels and the elastic section
modulus of the wale beam on both anchor levels as well as of the sheet piles.
The assignment should be handed in according to the course schedule.
