Assignment 2 Waste Program Design You may complete this assignment individually or in groups. You or your group has been hired to research, design, and plan a comprehensive waste program in various areas of Ontario. You will be assigned one of the following five waste programs, however you may propose an alternative that must be approved by your instructor.
1. Expanded polystyrene recycling in Ontario
2. Fleming College waste reduction
3. Bio-hazardous materials diversion from trash and recycling in Peterborough
4. Cost reduction for institutional organic waste disposal in Toronto
5. Marine and aquatic plastic recycling from Lake Ontario There are 2 main perspectives that you must maintain while developing this program.
This program must be sustainable for the environment This program must be financially sustainable The first phase of your program is Research. Your will need to research the following:
1. The sources of the waste you are addressing with your project and volume/weight.
2. The current practices (or lack thereof), for tackling your chosen waste issue.
3. The stakeholders associated with your waste.
4. The current costs associated with your waste to every stakeholder type. (ie. How much does transportation, processing and recycling of textiles cost? How much does it cost a hospital to dispose of organic waste?)
5. The opportunities to recover costs or return a profit. (ie. How much can you sell collected textiles for? How can you reduce the cost of organic waste disposal?)
6. Do similar programs exist? What can you learn from them? What can you do better?
*Please note that these questions are meant to guide you. You should have asked and answered many additional questions in your research phase. The answers to these questions will not be found solely on the internet. You will need to research WHO may have some of the information you are looking for and you will have to reach out to them by email, phone and possibly in-person. I suggest you begin to do this early on, because some people may take weeks to get back to you. You will need to combine research, communication, critical thinking and problem solving to contextualize the full life cycle and issues associated with your particular waste.
