On August 6, 1945, at the end of one of the most destructive wars in history, an American B-29 bomber dropped the atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The explosion destroyed almost 90% of Hiroshima and immediately killed tens of thousands of people; thousands more would later die of radiation exposure. Three days later, as Japanese leaders continued to resist surrender to the Allies, a second plane dropped another bomb on Nagasaki, killing another 40,000 people. A week after the bombing of Nagasaki, Emperor Hirohito announced the unconditional surrender of Japan, finally ending World War II.
