Assignment #3 Team Case Study: Mike to the Rescue Team Development and Leadership Your name is Mike Jones. You are 25 years old and fresh out of Mohawk College. Although you do have some job experience, this is your first job in a product management role. You have just been hired on as a product manager in the apparel division (high vis vests and work jackets, fire resistant coveralls, hard hats etc.) of a large safety company called ACME Safety. Following a comprehensive and week long onboarding program, at the start of the second week, the marketing manager calls you into her office. She outlines how she would like to expand out the line of safety hard hats that Acme offers, and would like you to oversee the development of additional features (for convenience, comfort and style) that could be added to their line of generic hard hats. She reiterates how Acme is known for their innovation and high-quality products. She wants you and your team to think outside the box. Part 1: You have been given a budget and launch date. You have been given free reign to select five (5) individuals from different departments within the company to make up your cross-functional design team and help coordinate efforts (500 words max). 1. Who do you select? (Make up these imaginary individuals, give them names, backgrounds and specific expertise that you feel would make them a key member of your team). 2. Make sure you explain why you picked these certain individuals and which specific departments you selected them from and why. Part 2: Once you have selected your team, you have to schedule your first introduction meeting with them. 3. Outline what you need to do to prepare for this meeting, layout an agenda (with times) for the meeting, and follow-up items (up to one-page, point form is OK). 4. What do you do to establish yourself as the leader in this new role? (Remember you are young and new to the role and many of your team members might have extensive experience working at Acme). How do you motivate them from the start and get them engaged and on your side from the get go? (250 words max.) Part 3: Following the first introduction meeting, you schedule a brainstorming session. 5. Brainstorm and select the best idea that you will bring forward to the marketing manager. You may want to do some research as to what other competitors are offering with regard to hard hat accessories. Try to be original. Explain your new idea in 200 words or less. You may want to sketch a picture of the idea for clarity. 6. Include one (1) key deliverable/activity for each imaginary team member that they should be working on prior to the next product meeting in two weeks. (250 words max. i.e. 50 words per member, point form is OK). Assignment #3 Outline: Mike to the Rescue 20% of overall course mark The purpose of this activity is for learners to develop skills in teamwork, writing, presentations, critical thinking and problem-solving. SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: Based on the accompanying case study, in your team, answer the 6 questions listed in the 3 parts within the case study. A number of words etc. have been listed in each part of the case for Part A below. Penalties will be assessed for over-length documents. The report does not require footnotes or citations but does require justification for and/or explanation of why you say what you do based on course readings and lectures. The audience for this document is me. What that means is that I'm expecting a concise document, something that is organized so that I can follow your arguments clearly. (week 13) depending upon when your normally scheduled class is. Assume I am the marketing manager.
