This video presents a good example of why you need the people who do the work in the room when you are mapping out a process. *Note, if you only had the manager representing and discussing the work, in this case, the manager would not be able to effectively describe the steps in the process as it actually happened. The manager would describe what they think should happen or what they would do if they did the process, from beginning to end. In this case, it would not match what does happen. If you do not capture all the baseline information and ensure you understand the current state, you can miss critical data and the problem identification, needs analysis and potential solutions when analyzing the business process. This can lead to missing the opportunity to fix the "real" gaps and problems. If this is not done correctly, the need, gap, solutions and future state will not be effective when implementing a change for improvement.
