ASSIGNMENT CONTEXT AND INSTRUCTIONS
Context
You are working on a group project with several other classmates in another course, e.g., Marketing or Accounting, etc. Your group wants to get a handle on the kind of communication challenges that you are likely to face once you graduate from Kwantlen and are employed in your field. The group wants a good sense of the written, oral and interpersonal communication skills that will be required for your success.
Instructions
Part One: Letter: 5%
- On behalf of your group, write a letter to an industry professional in the field that you are currently pursuing. Ask them about the key communication challenges that industry professionals face in their field.
- Youll need to research and find a real business entity (e.g., Telus) so that the job title, company name and company address are real. (You can make up a name for the business contact if you choose, or use a real name that is public domaini.e., the name of a person and their title that is available on the Web.)
- In the letter to an industry professional in your field, you need to persuade them to send you the information that you are seeking.
- Introduce yourself by outlining the program that you are in (e.g., Marketing), the credential that you seek (e.g., Marketing Diploma) and the career goal that you have (e.g., Marketing Manager for large retail corporation).
- Explain that the information that you are requesting is for a school group project and provide appropriate details; i.e., keep in mind the kind of information they would want from you if they were to take your request seriously.
- Ensure that your letter contains at least one heading and one bulleted list. (Hint: You should have a list of communications related questions that you would like your industry contact to answer. Limit this list to 5 questions max.)
- Ensure that you end the letter with a clear action request in your last paragraph, including any time sensitivities.
- Sign the letter with a complimentary close.
Part Two: Memo: 3%
- Write a memo (email) to your KPU class group asking them to review the Draft Letter that you are planning to send on behalf of the group.
- Let the group know the kind of feedback you want from them so you can send a more effective letter.
- End with precise Action Request to your group.
Note: In real life, you would not send a memo to your groupyou would send an email or text. But, for the purposes of this assignment, remember that an email is essentially an electronic memo.
