Question:
Assume you are a human resource specialist for the City of Rio Salado. The human resource director has asked you to provide recommendations on orientation, onboarding, and staff development for employees from hire through employment to improve the current process.
Your report should include the answers to each of the questions listed below with sufficient detail to demonstrate your knowledge to your supervisor.
In order to create effective employee orientation and onboarding, you will need to determine needs, design, and evaluate your training. Based on the scenario, complete the following:
- Needs Assessment: Explain what is involved in conducting a needs assessment and why employee onboarding and orientation programs are necessary.
- Design: Explain the importance of effectively designing a course/program. As you are creating onboarding and orientation, what factors need to be considered to ensure employees can successfully begin their new positions?
- Evaluation: Why is the course/program evaluation necessary? How would you evaluate success, failure, or changes needed to the onboarding and orientation programs?
b. Orientation: Explain the difference between orientation and onboarding. How should orientation be structured for new employees? Would you recommend completing orientation before the first day on the job? Why or why not?
c. Onboarding: Provide recommendations for how you would structure an employee's first day on the job. What would you want an employee to do the first day and would the onboarding process extend beyond day 1? Why or why not? When you were hired at your current job, was the onboarding experience effective or ineffective? Why? (If you don't currently have a job - think back to a past job or interview a family member or friend on their experience).
d: Staff Development: Assume a manager wants to offer social media training to their staff. Describe how needs assessment, design, and evaluation would be used to determine whether this staff development is appropriate to offer.
